Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
Per the WHO report, waist-to-hip ratios above 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women are associated with substantially increased metabolic risk; ratios in the 0.90–0.99 (men) and 0.80–0.84 (women) bands are considered moderate risk.
Why does waist size matter independently?
Abdominal (visceral) fat is more strongly linked to cardiometabolic risk than fat stored elsewhere. The NIH notes that disease risk rises with a waist over about 40 inches (102 cm) for men or 35 inches (88 cm) for women — this calculator flags that threshold too.
Where exactly should I measure?
WHO protocol: waist at the midpoint between the lower rib border and the top of the hip bone, hips at the maximum circumference over the buttocks. Measure standing, after a normal exhale, with the tape snug but not compressing skin.
